What's an ideal relationship? Men might describe the relationship they have with their car, or their favorite tool or their television. They might talk about an old buddy or co-worker. They tend to like their relationships to be simple and uncomplicated. Women might describe a relationship with an object, maybe a kitchen appliance or a cozy sweater. Women also form close relationships with old friends and neighbors. Women tend to favor relationships that are reliable and steadfast.

My idea of a great relationship is the one I have with my dog, Cleo. It's pretty ideal when you think of it. I provide the dog food, the shelter, a daily walk and some love. I may have bad days and act grouchy. Cleo on the other hand never seems to have a bad day, because she never fails to greet me at the door with excitement and enthusiasm, and boundless love. She is comforting, reliable, steadfast and easy to maintain. The perfect relationship.

It's pretty remarkable the relationship between me and my dog. I know exactly what to expect, so she is reliable to a fault. I know exactly what I have to give, not much really. I know exactly what I'm going to get - everything she has. This is unconditional love.

What is the definition of unconditional love?

Unconditional love is the king of love you can give knowing your partner is not perfect. It's the kind of love that lingers after the passion has faded.

OK, so your spouse or partner has faults, you get it, and perfect they are not. They probably made their share of mistakes too. You still love your spouse because of those imperfections rather than in spite of them.

This is the definition of unconditional love.

You've got to also take a good look in the mirror and examine your faults, imperfections and mistakes you've made. You need to admit them and accept them in order for the unconditional love of your partner to overcome them.

Is there any lesson here? I Do we want to get a dog, because that's a dependable, comforting way to get love? We all clutter our lives with thoughts and emotions, trials and tribulations, and there is the tendency to let our issues become bigger than they really are and rule our lives. That's only going to inhibit the giving and receiving of true love.

If you are serious about saving your marriage the key is in finding ways to place the emotional clutter to one side and let your unconditional love come through. Learn to accept your faults and your spouse's faults. Learn to overlook mistakes. Accept the fact that you will have negative thoughts and feelings, but don't give them permission to shut out everything good in the relationship. Love unconditionally, and be free to accept unconditional love.
